Why are the puppies named before we buy them? Well, because I can, oh just kidding. I have a pattern that I am following. In research of dog names, breeder’s typically pick out themes for the litter and follow through in naming the litter. A litter could be born on the fourth of July and all the puppies named “Americana” names such as Patriarch, Independence, RedWhiteBlue, Soldier, America, etc., on their papers by the breeder, or left up to the new owners with the agreement of the breeder. It’s really up to the breeder if they choose to register the puppies prior to placement, or the two parties come up with an agreement of the name prior to registering. Some breeders have a regular pattern, while other depend on “surroundings” at the time of the conception or birth. I personally use a pattern in which you will inevitably notice that I use the description “C-Litter,” or E-Litter.” This not only helps me reference the puppy, but really has inscribed the time and where this puppy is at this time. It helps keep things all straight. Can the new owners change the name? As owners you may call your puppy whatever you wish. On the papers however, it’s what the breeder decides if they register the dog before you purchase it. It should really however it should really be a joint decision and all reasons should be considered, but reputable breeders take pride in their offspring and typically want to at least have their kennel name in front. Does it bother the breeder if you change the name? Sometimes, yes it does. We’ve picked the names to match the personality – at least I have – from a list of possible names and feel like that puppy is that name. Even if the name was changed after leaving our house, I will always remember the puppy by the original name, and make sure I always use the name given to him by his true owners. I would never disrespect a new owner’s call name. A changed name is that dog’s name and under any circumstance I will call it by what the owner has named the puppy and be proud of it. How do you pick you names? I started using the alphabet after reading about a popular Boxer breeder using this method, However I have put a filter onto my names; I use only names found in the Bible for the letter of the litter in which in August of 2005 I was on the E-Litter. I would rather people use those names in registration and have certainly added to names to create a name that people wanted. Take for instance … I had a placement for flashy fawn in the D-Litter and they had always wanted a Boxer named Bishop. Well my B-Litter happened two years prior, and so we decided on the registered name as “Tazmanian’s Devout Bishop.” This very easily incorporated what both of us were trying to accomplish. I guess what I’m saying is don’t be afraid to ask. |
